More woe for prospective annuitants
12/02/2012
Pension annuity rates are hitting new lows. I have previously discussed the reasons for falling annuity rates. I can still see no real reason why annuity rates should rise in the future. Income Drawdown is an option but I still feel that it is too risky for the majority of pensioners - most people who have used income drawdown have experienced a falling level of income over time. I do not think that this is generally a suitable option for those without significant other sources of retirement income.
There are a few options for those who want to buy an annuity but would like some potential for future income growth. These are called 'asset-backed' or 'investment-linked' annuities, whereby your future income levels are linked to the performance of an investment fund or funds. In the current climate I think that it is worthwhile taking a small degree of risk with your future income levels, in exchange for the chance of some growth.
Statistically, the average 65 year old in the UK will live for another 18-20 years. I think that age 65 might be a bit early to move from stock market risks (within your pension fund) to no risk whatsoever. However, this is an individual choice and needs plenty of thought and discussion.
Call Mulberry if you are planning your retirement and want to know what options are available.
